Residences and mini-apartments
Both the 20 residence halls operated by the and the other student dormitories in Hanover offer good and affordable housing. Some of the accommodations are located close to the universities. To be eligible to live in one of the Studentenwerk residence halls, you must be enrolled at a university in Hanover. Almost all rooms in the residence halls are furnished, and many offer inexpensive high鈥憇peed internet access. The monthly rent (including utilities) for a room in a Studentenwerk residence hall is usually between 鈧240 and 鈧500.
In other residence halls, the rent is approximately 鈧500鈥700.
Private Accommodation Market
You can find room offers and requests in the main university building (Welfenschloss), in the various dining halls, in the libraries, and on the notice boards (鈥淪chwarzes Brett鈥) in the institutes. Rooms in shared apartments (so鈥慶alled 鈥淲G rooms鈥) are often advertised there. WG is the abbreviation for WohnGemeinschaft, meaning a shared flat in which several people live together, partly for cost reasons. The kitchen and bathroom are usually shared.
Depending on the location and size of the room, there are considerable price differences: as a rule, WG rooms are somewhat more expensive than comparable rooms in student residence halls, but the living environment tends to be more personal.
In addition to WG offers, you will also find furnished or partially furnished rooms, which are usually offered for a fixed period as temporary sublets (鈥淶wischenmiete鈥).
